Worked example

Shoes priced at $80 with 25% off.

  1. Savings: 80 × 25 ÷ 100 = $20.
  2. Sale price: 80 − 20 = $60.

Result: You save $20 and pay $60.

Frequently asked questions

How do stacked discounts work, like an extra 20% off a 30% sale?

They multiply rather than add. 30% off then 20% off means paying 0.70 × 0.80 = 0.56 of the price — a total of 44% off, not 50%.

Does this include sales tax?

No. Tax is charged on the discounted price in most US states, so add your local tax rate to the sale price for the true total.

What is the quick mental shortcut for 25% off?

25% is one quarter — divide the price by 4 for the savings, or multiply by 0.75 for the sale price directly.
