Formula

Percentage increase compares the change to the starting value:
% Increase = (New − Old) ÷ |Old| × 100
If the new value is smaller, the result is negative — which really means a decrease.

Worked example

A jacket’s price rises from $80 to $100.

  1. Change: 100 − 80 = 20.
  2. Divide by the original: 20 ÷ 80 = 0.25.
  3. Multiply by 100: 25%.

Result: The price increased by $20, which is a 25% increase.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between percentage increase and percentage points?

Percentage points are the simple arithmetic difference between two percentages (5% to 7% is +2 percentage points). Percentage increase is relative: 5% to 7% is a 40% increase.

Can percentage increase exceed 100%?

Yes — any time the value more than doubles. Growing from 50 to 150 is a 200% increase.

Why divide by the old value and not the new one?

Percentage increase is measured relative to where you started. Using the new value would describe a different quantity (closer to a percentage decrease back down).
