Amps to kW Converter
Electrical conversions depend on the system: DC is simple multiplication, AC needs the power factor, and three-phase adds a √3. This converter handles amps↔kW, VA↔amps and kVA↔kW for DC, single-phase and three-phase circuits.
Results
Assumptions: Idealized formulas with balanced three-phase loads and the power factor you supply. Not a substitute for code-compliant electrical design.
Formula
How to use this calculator
- Choose the conversion and the electrical system.
- Enter the voltage and the value to convert.
- For AC kilowatts, set the power factor (0.9 is a common planning value), then Calculate.
Worked example
10 amps at 120 V, single-phase, power factor 0.9.
- Power: 120 × 10 × 0.9 = 1,080 W.
- In kilowatts: 1.08 kW.
Result: The load draws 1.08 kW.
Frequently asked questions
What is power factor, in plain terms?
In AC circuits with motors and coils, current and voltage fall out of sync, so only part of the apparent power (VA) does real work (W). Power factor is that fraction — 1.0 for a pure heater, often 0.8–0.95 for motors.
Why does three-phase use √3?
Three-phase power combines three offset waveforms. For balanced loads with line-to-line voltage, the total is √3 × V × I × PF — the √3 comes from the 120° phase geometry.
Can I size a breaker with this?
These formulas give load values, but breaker and wire sizing follow electrical code rules (including continuous-load derating at 80%). Treat results as planning figures and have real installations checked by a licensed electrician.
